The Eternal Order In Nature

Australia boasts some of the best artists in botanical illustration and an exhibition which showcases both the old and the new is sorely overdue.  The Eternal Order in Nature: The Science of Botanical Illustration presented by the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne will be timed to coincide with the XVIII International Botanical Congress at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in July 2011. The Eternal Order in Nature: The Science of Botanical Illustration will be a great opportunity to present not only 30 of the country’s leading talents in botanical illustration but will also display the diversity of Australian flora and landscape. Each of the artists will produce a series of small to large scale projects which will raise questions and challenge the nature of botanical illustration with its capacity to blur the boundaries between art and science.  This exhibition will provide an insight into the methods and processes of botanical illustration, present collaborative projects with botanists and offer the viewer an insight into understanding the skills required to produce such beautiful and accurate works, many of which will be for sale.

1ST PRIZE – INTERNATIONAL STREET PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD AND THE WINNER IS.....
 MR JESSE MARLOW

Lantern Printing would like to congratulate one of our favourite clients Jesse Marlow who won 1st Prize in the inaugural International Street Photography Prize. The award was part of the London Street Photograph Festival which takes place during the month of July, with over 1600 Entrants. Street photography is perhaps more easily defined as a method than a genre, it is documentary, portraiture and other genres, but the key elements of spontaneity, careful observation and an open mind ready to capture whatever appears in the viewfinder are essential.

Our good friends and supporters of Lantern Printing Michael Nader Dewhirst and Richard Gibbon are holding a joint photographic exhibition titled Two Lens Are Better Than One. Michael and Richard selected to print their work on our Museo Silver Rag semi gloss art paper, sterling choice!

Michael will be showing photographs taken in Egypt during his July 2008 visit.  Richard will be showing photos taken from the Bay of Fires in Tasmania, from June this year. Two places that are poles apart and as different as you can possibly imagine, yet linked by amazing natural and manmade "rock" formations.

"Both Plumley and Stuart currently study at the Victorian College of the Arts, this will be their first show at a Melbourne gallery. Plumley’s work explores the possibilities of microbiological environments and organisms, and the questionable, abstract representations that science constructs to illustrate these micro and nano topographies. Plumley explains that the forms he uses (looking like oddly coloured sausages strung together by a sausage machine gone wrong, or the balloon creations of a blind clown) are representative of the interactions between cells or the molecular building blocks of proteins. And that the traditional balloon animals he hides in his forms allude to a sentimental, human side of science that is disguised amidst the rationality of today’s scientific method. Rather than being ‘science bashing’ Plumley’s work pokes humorously at the fact that behind every scientific discovery and finding are people such as sponsors and researchers who interpret results according to their own political, ethical, economic and religious agendas. Through crisp line drawing, Stuart investigates the explosion of inexpensive cameras, the likes of which have become mandatory accessories incorporated into mobile phones. The kind of images these cheap cameras capture, the likes of which litter Facebook and MySpace profiles come together in Stuarts work as interfolded super-flat renditions akin to architectural blueprints or circuit boards. Figures, household objects, various interiors/exteriors and technological icons are paired with biological systems hinting at the almost organic way that we interact with and adopt technologies".
